Asian Hate Continues As Racists Target Celebrities Online

Sadly, as Asian hate and prejudice continues to grow due to the issues of the global pandemic, Covid-19, celebrities are also facing slander and hate through online commentary an forums.

With BTS being one of the many celebrities attacked online and the number of Asian-related assualt cases spiraling out of control in the USA since early January (although we can safely say this has been going on for quite sometime and just receivng media attention), the ill-minded behavior of these racist individuls continues to spread from physical attacks to more online verbal assualts and harrassment.

Recently, famous soccer player Son Heung Min faced a barage of negative commentary on his Twitter, Instagram and other SNS forums. ‘Tottenham,’ the official account of the Spurs team, stood in solidarity of the player by posting his picture alongside heartfelt words on Twitter, supporting the player and showcasing comeradery.

The post read “Another matchday and more abhorrent racial abuse suffered by one of our players. This has again been reported to the platforms and we shall now undertake a full review alongside the Premier League to determine the most effective action moving forward. We stand with you, Sonny.”

However, the amount of negative comments under the page and personal photos of him are quite alarming and heart-breaking to see. Trigger warning, go forward and read at your own risk!

But what exactly started the hate? According to various news sources, during the April 11th match Tottenham lost 1-3 to Manchester United team in the 31st round of the English Premier League in the 2020-21 season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England. Son Heung Min scored the first goal in the 40th minute of the first half, but Tottenham was not able to win the match after giving up three goals to Manchester United. Soon after the match, social media began flooding with hate comments over Son’s winning goals. Various anti-fans swarmed Son Heung Min’s social media to leave racist slurs and malicious commentary.

Due to the continued harrasment, Tottenham made another official statement, “Another matchday and more abhorrent racial abuse suffered by one of our players. This has again been reported to the platforms, and we shall now undertake a full review alongside the Premier League to determine the most effective action moving forward.”

What do you think of this troubling situation? Hopefully, alongside the Corona Virus, the hate towards Asians can end soon. We support you, Son Heung Min, and all our favorite Asian celebrities and communities.
